With today's marketplace being what it is, every leader is building and leading diverse teams and that requires a different quality of leadership than has been required before. Great minds think alike is no long valid. Finding the right fit in hiring, no longer means finding a "mini me". The changing demographic is the greatest opportunity in the 21st century, but many industries are ignoring it. As the population changes the power base remains the same. In North America over half the population are people of colour, but you can walk into many companies and classrooms and not see much of that diversity reflected. Which faculties are inclusive and which are not? To avoid apartheid you must find the something or someone in your process that is sending away your diverse talent. For years I banged my head against a wall not getting why my white colleagues didn't see the stereotypes they were perpetuating. More often than not I was met with resistance. No surprise because I was making them wrong for something they weren't conscious of.
So I have been somewhat heartened by the latest Harvard research that talks about "unconscious bias". My colleagues, smart sensitve, loving human beings who I adored in so many ways were just unconcious of the harm they were causing and as Maya Angelou says, when they know better they will do better, and my keynotes and workshops will help your team members "know better by sharing a vision of the world that they can all buy into and making them aware of the differencet they can each make in creating that vision.
